Course Description
Course Profile
The degree program Central European and Balkan Studies is an innovative combination of philological studies with practical knowledge and skills necessary in contemporary business and cultural tourism field. Innovation concept is based on the combination of competencies and skills in studies of Central Europe with Balkan, and on a targeting it on the practical dimension of literary and intercultural communication necessary to build internal and external information cycle flow in business and tourism industry. In addition, CE&BS provides preparation for the philologist profession preparation in the field of knowledge and competence oriented on the aspect of language, literature and cultural communication.

Graduate competencies
Knowledge of globalization and digitalization processes, as well as political and social changes in the formation of contemporary Central European literatures and cultures.
Knowledge of the functioning of cultural institutions and trends in contemporary cultural life in Central Europe.
Knowledge of the key mechanisms governing the sociology and economics of cultural and literary life, as well as the elementary principles of the creation and development of various forms of entrepreneurship in Central Europe and the Balkans.
Knowledge of intercultural literary communication.
Ability to work in an intercultural environment.
Proficiency in specialized English.
Career prospects
CEBS graduates will be able to find employment in:
cultural centers,
commercial companies,
corporations,
diplomatic missions,
tourist companies,
and in all those institutions where knowledge of the culture of Central Europe and the Balkans and its interaction with other circles of civilization is an essential component of the profession.
Education Requirements
Set of documents
• photo file which will be used when generating the personal questionnaire
• a scan of the Matura certificate
• a scan of the supplement to the Matura certificate - applies to candidates who have increased the the Matura exam score or have taken the Matura exam in additional subjects
• a scan of the IB diploma - applies to graduates of schools belonging to the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB)
• a scan of statement by a statutory representative - applies to candidates under 18 i.e. people who as of October 1, 2025 are under 18 years old
• a document confirming knowledge of English at B2 level
Candidates with documents obtained abroad also provide:
• a scan of a foreign document, which is legalized or accompanied by an apostille, entitling the candidate to take up higher education studies in the country where the document was issued
• a scan of translation of the document into the language of the studies undertaken by the candidate, performed by a sworn translator entered into the list of sworn translators maintained by the Polish Minister of Justice, or certified by a Polish consul in the country where the document was issued
• a scan of the document recognizing the foreign certificate as equivalent to the Polish Matura certificate – in the case of candidates for first-cycle or long-cycle master's studies to whom this applies
• a scan of the document recognizing the foreign diploma as equivalent to the Polish diploma – in the case of candidates for second-cycle studies to whom this applies
• a scan of a document confirming the entitlement to study tuition-free – in the case of the foreigners concerned
Other Requirements
A competency interview conducted in English, the purpose of which is to verify the candidate's language skills in the field of English at the B2 level, enabling effective study of Central European and Balkan Studies
Entrance examination for foreigners
Foreigners applying for admission to this field of study who hold educational credentials obtained outside the EU, EFTA, or OECD countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada, Republic of Korea, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey, Hungary, United Kingdom, Italy) and who do not hold an International Baccalaureate (IB), a European Baccalaureate (EB), or a document recognized under an international agreement on the recognition of education (China, Libya, or Ukraine), are additionally required to take the entrance examination.
The purpose of the examination is to assess whether the applicant has the knowledge necessary to undertake studies in the given field, at the specified level and academic profile. The examination results in a grade of either “pass” or “fail.” Passing the examination allows the candidate to proceed to the next stages of the admission process, but is not tantamount to admission to studies. Failure to pass the entrance examination means the candidate is not admitted to the programme.
